Sue Jackson

Dr Sue Jackson

Dr Susan A. Jackson is a psychologist and author, known internationally for her pioneering work on the psychological concept of flow. Following extensive in-depth qualitative investigations of flow in elite athletes in the early 1990’s, Jackson and colleagues have developed a suite of self-report instruments, collectively known as the Flow Scales, to assess flow in various domains. In addition to her research endeavours, Sue’s work includes high performance psychology consulting and writing about flow for an applied audience. Sue’s insights into flow stem from her close collaboration with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, the founder of the flow concept, with whom she co-authored Flow in Sports (1999), which has been instrumental in bringing an understanding of flow to athletes and coaches. In 2024, Sue published Experiencing Flow: Life Beyond Boredom and Anxiety, to help promote understanding of the flow experience, and to foster the continuation of Csikszentmihalyi’s ground-breaking contributions to the field of psychology. Having worked with, and been mentored by Csikszentmihalyi, Sue is motivated to continue the legacy of Mihaly’s flow concept, and to help promote widespread understanding of what flow is, and why it matters as a subjective experience if one is interested in living a good life.
